Abstract

The article deals with the question to what extend anti-pluralist attitudes are rooted within society. By analyzing postings on krone.at and derstandard.at that deal with Roma and homosexuals this article demonstrates that these marginalized groups are presented as threats to society in general. With regard to Roma, rather unanimous negative comments are displayed sometimes close to hate speech. Coverage of homosexuals leads to an extremely polarized discourse. While some-times commenters express deep contempt towards homosexuals other show a growing acceptance. On the whole, anti-pluralism is part of the mainstream. Marginalized groups are presented as a fictitious threat in order to reject pluralism, a core element of modern democracies.
